  16. <p>Cheers (NBC). Now in its second season, this barroom sitcom has
  17. found its saucy stride and, in stars Ted Danson and Shelly Long,
  18. has created a mismatched pair that could give Tracy and Hepburn
  19. a run for their moxie.
  20. </p>
  21. <p>Faerie Tale Theatre (Showtime). These slightly fractured but
  22. never completely Grimm tales, produced by actress Shelley
  23. Duvall, give a hip, witty twist and dreamy visual style to
  24. storybook classics.
  25. </p>
  26. <p>The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (Mobile Showcase
  27. Network). Even squeezed to fit the small screen, the Royal
  28. Shakespeare Company's epic entertainment still ranked as a
  29. unique theatrical treat. The nine-hour drama preserved 150
  30. great performances in a format Dickens would have loved: the
  31. mini-series.

  33. <p>Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever (NBC). A stirring video
  34. jukebox of the most memorable sounds of a quarter century of
  35. soul, from the still irresistible Temptations through the
  36. stylized showmanship of Michael Jackson.

  38. <p>Nickelodeon (Warner Amex Satellite Entertainment Co.). A
  39. channel devoted to children without being childish. Among its
  40. most notable enticements: the Pinwheel puppets for preschoolers,
  41. and Livewire, an exuberant variety talk show for early teens.
  42. </p>
  43. <p>NBC News Overnight. "Being best is not enough," rued NBC News
  44. Chief Reuven Frank in canceling this late-night paragon after
  45. 17 months. Insomniacs will miss Overnight's tough reporting, its
  46. sprightly sense of the absurd and especially its Queen of Tart,
  47. Co-Anchor Linda Ellerbee. The first nightly news show good
  48. enough to warrant reruns.

  50. <p>Special Bulletin (NBC). Gripping in a way that The Day After
  51. was not, this docudrama presented a fictional nuclear crisis as
  52. a news event actually in progress. The result was a dark parody
  53. of the pontifical way in which the networks package disaster.
  54. </p>
  55. <p>Sunday Morning with Charles Kuralt (CBS). Light but never
  56. lightweight, this 90-minute eye opener demonstrates that
  57. long-form magazine shows can work, and that Kuralt is as nimble
  58. off the road as on.
  59. </p>
  60. <p>Swan Lake, Minnesota (ARTS). Swan maidens in tutus riding bales
  61. of hay up a conveyor belt? This poetic, disarmingly simple
  62. adaptation of the classic ballet inventively mixed a
  63. country-and-western twang with Tchaikovskian lyricism.
  64. </p>
  65. <p>Viet Nam: A Television History (PBS). With its painstaking
  66. marshaling of detail, this 13-hour documentary was television
  67. as the first draft of history. It was, by turns, poignant and
  68. chilling and never blinked.</p>
